About

The photographs shown in this online exhibition belong, unless otherwise stated, to the Fonds Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (IS 4314), owned by the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Foundation and preserved in the Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire of Lausanne. The inventory (in French) of these archives is available on Patrinum.

As a design choice, and to improve their contrast, the photographs have been digitally converted to black and white (most of the original are of a sepia hue). The legends of the photographs (in italic) are by Arthur Conan Doyle himself.

Photographs and pictures without any specific mention belong to private collections.

The title of this online exhibition (“An Alpine Walk”) comes from a poem by Arthur Conan Doyle published (among others) in the January 1894 number of the magazine The Young Man.
